Bij Matrix Rotterdam krijgt het modulaire project van Duo Bottasso een intieme en bijzondere vorm: een concert waarin archiefbeelden, akoestische instrumenten en muzikale ontmoetingen samenkomen.

Vroege Italiaanse films uit het begin van de 20e eeuw — oorspronkelijk bedoeld als cinematografische ansichtkaarten — tonen steden, landschappen, arbeid en sociale veranderingen uit een periode vlak vóór de opkomst van het fascisme. Deze beelden keren terug, niet als nostalgie, maar als levend materiaal: fragmenten die vragen oproepen over herinnering, geschiedenis en de manier waarop het verleden blijft doorwerken in het heden.

Voor deze bijzondere editie nodigt Duo Bottasso ney-speler Sinan Arat uit. Het ademende, meditatieve geluid van de ney voegt een extra laag toe aan het project: een muzikale reis langs grenzen, migratie, uitwisseling en tradities die zich door tijd en ruimte blijven bewegen.

Met een combinatie van live elektronica, visuals, traditionele instrumenten en improvisatie ontstaat een meeslepende voorstelling waarin beeld en muziek voortdurend met elkaar in dialoog gaan.

At Matrix Rotterdam, the modular project of Duo Bottasso takes on a more intimate form: a concert shaped by archival cinema, acoustic instruments, and intercultural encounter.

Early 20th-century Italian films —once conceived as cinematic postcards— trace cities, landscapes, labour, and political struggles from a country in rapid transformation, in the years preceding the authoritarian crisis of fascism. These images return not as nostalgia, but as living material: fragments through which to question how memory travels, how histories sediment, and how the past continues to reverberate in the present.

For this postcard, Duo Bottasso invites Sinan Arat to join the project with his ney. Carried by breath and shaped by centuries of transmission, its sound introduces another geography into the work—one that speaks of crossings, displacement, gifts and exchanges, and of traditions circulating beyond fixed borders. Of what moves along mountain paths or across the sea, sometimes in secrecy, sometimes in freedom—at its own pace, following its own cycles.
